Mrs. Wm. McAlpin was called to Vail, Iowa, several weeks ago to the bedside of her father, who passed away November 22nd. The following was published in the Vail Observer of Nov. 30th, 1921: Thomas Bartlett, a highly respected and honored citizen of Vail, passed away at 7 o'clock Tuesday evening, November 22, at the age of 75 years, 9 months and 23 days. He had been in failing health for sometime and was confined to his bed just one week. Throughout this time he was tenderly cared for by his daughter, Mrs. Wm. McAlpin of Elk City, Okla., who was at his bedside all the time. But despite loving care and physicians skill, his time had come and he passed away peacefully to his final rest. He was cheerful to the last and expressed his willingness to go, having said to his friends: "I am ready to go if it is today or tomorrow." Thomas Bartlett was born in Oxfordshire, England, January 29, 1846. He emigrated to America in 1864 and came west locating near Sabula, Jackson county, Iowa. Here he met and was united in marriage on Oct. 4, 1871, with Miss Sarah Ann Cook. They later came to Crawford county, reaching here March 16, 1874. He engaged in farming which occupation he followed until 1903 when he retired, rented the farm and moved to town where has since remained an honored resident. The good wife and mother proceeded him in death, having passed away April 10, 1906. Ten children were born to Mr. Bartlett and wife: two sons, Charles and Thomas having preceded him to the land from whence none return. Eight children survive to mourn the loss of their honored father and all were present at the funeral. They are: Mrs. Henrietta Lingle of Denison, Iowa; Mrs. Hester Petty of Laurel, Nebraska; Mrs. Mamie McAlpin of Elk City, Oklahoma; Mrs. Libbie Petty of Storm Lake, Iowa; Seymour Bartlett of Odebolt, Iowa; William Bartlett of Denison, Iowa; George Bartlett and Mrs. Sadie Abbott of Vail. He also leaves 31 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Also one sister, Mrs. Mary Ann Martin of Preston, Iowa. Mr. Bartlett was a man of sterling qualities, honest and upright in all his dealings and was highly respected and honored by everyone. The funeral was held at 10 o'clock Friday morning, Nov. 25th at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sadie Abbott. The services were conducted by Rev. J. Morgan Williams of Boone, Iowa, formerly pastor of St. John's Episcopal church here and was buried in the Vail cemetery. The pallbearers were Frank Ayleward, John Stagleman, W. J. Beck, Adam Short, Ben Olson and W. W. Watson.
