BASCOM BATES DIES. As we go to press we learn of the death of Mrs. Bascom Bates at five o'clock this morning. Mr. Bates and son Wheeler were first taken ill with the flu, about ten days ago, and the worry and care over-taxed the strength of Mrs. Bates who has been in ill health for sometime, and when she became ill several days later with the flu, she lacked the vitality to overcome the disease. Funeral services will be held at the First Christian Church Friday afternoon. At this writing Mr. Bates and son, Wheeler, are reported better. (10 Mar 1922, Elk City Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Mr. Bates and son, Wheeler, were taken ill with bad colds, developing pneumonia, and Mrs. Bates, a very elderly lady, was up night and day waiting on them. It was too much for Mrs. Bates and she gave up with a nervous chill last Monday and in her weakened condition could not survive the shock, death angels taking her soul at 5:05 a.m., Thursday. Mr. Bates was not expected to live yesterday morning at the time of his wife's death, but later reports were that his fever had broken and he was doing better. Wheeler was much better yesterday and could take some nourishment. The neighbors have been very good to help, some being with the sick all the time. The time of the funeral had not been set early today, but it is expected it will be postponed as long as possible for the arrival of relatives. Mrs. Bates' body will be laid to rest in Fairlawn. Robinson and Son have charge of the services. Mrs. Dona Stone, a niece of Mrs. Bates, arrived Wednesday from Oklahoma City, and Mrs. George Hollis and her daughter, Lois, of Tulsa, arrived yesterday. Mrs. Hollis was the wife of a deceased son of Bascom Bates, before her marriage to Mr. Geo. Hollis.
