(2 Feb 1922, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): CONRAD BENJAMIN BROOKS Conrad Benjamin Brooks was born in April 1901 near Elk City, Okla. Conrad received his common school education at Pleasant Valley. One of the teachers describes him as "One of the most delightful boys I ever knew - full of fun, full of tender feeling, ready for his lessons, ready for a story, ready for fun." At home he helped his father on the farm, as well as assisting his mother with her work. But in spare time, you would always find Conrad reading, improving his mind, or perhaps sketching or drawing in which he showed unusual ability. In 1918 he entered the Elk City high school. While there he made many friends and as expressed in The Elk of 1920 - "Conrad says little but leave it to him to write it." His ambition was to enter Stillwater College next fall, and with his pleasing personality and intelligence one could not fail to see a bright future. But the Maker of us all decided differently, for on January 8, 1922, Conrad became quite ill. He was taken to Tisdal hospital where Dr. Mormon of Oklahoma City was called in consultation with Dr. Tisdal. They pronounced the trouble multiple abscesses at the base of the liver. No relief could be given. Of his illness, his special nurse said: "He never even used a slang expression and he always thanked me and smiled even to the last. He certainly must have been an unusually good boy." His death occurred at 2 a.m. on January 28, 1922. The impressive funeral sermon was delivered at Canute church by Rev. John Carman of Mangum, Okla. Afterwards interment was made in Canute cemetery by the side of an infant brother who proceeded him 15 years ago. His friends acting as pallbearers were: Richard Turley, Forest Penn Harrison, George Peeler, Drew Watkins, John Gowdy and brother. A large crowd gathered to pay their last tribute to this promising youth. He leaves to mourn his loss his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. (sic) Brooks, two brothers, Bryan and Everett; two sisters, Birch and Bernice; aunts and uncles besides a host of friends.
