All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************ BURGESS, BERTHA (31 Oct 1918, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): BERTHA SMOTHERMAN BURGESS DEAD. Mrs. Bertha Smotherman Burgess was born near El Reno, Oklahoma, on August 9th, 1896, and died near Grimes, Okla., October 24th, 1918, aged 22 years, 2 months and 15 days. Funeral services were held at the Fairlawn Cemetery at Elk City, Friday afternoon, October 25th, conducted by Rev. M. T. Allen. Beautiful songs were sung by members of the choir, who had also sang that afternoon at the graves of Mrs. VanAuken and little Gladys Gibbons. Bertha Smotherman was married to Raymond Burgess September 2nd, 1916, and to this union one little boy was born, little Francis, who is now a year old. The husband was seriously ill at the time of the funeral and unable to attend. Before her marriage Mrs. Burgess lived in Elk City several years and was a member of the M. E. Church South, of this place, and while here was a great worker in the S. W. C. Before her death she fully realized her condition and called the family to her bedside and bade them all a final farewell, telling them she was not afraid to go, and for all to meet her in heaven. Her father died several years ago in Elk City. Besides her mother, husband, and baby, five brothers and one sister are left to mourn her loss. Hugh Smotherman who is now in Mineral Wells, Texas, Charles Smotherman of Elk City, Marvin Smotherman, Los Animas, Col., Francis Smotherman who is now in France with Co. B., 343 M.G. Bn., Jim and Grace Smotherman who live with their mother south of Sayre. To the sorrowing ones, whose sunlight she was, we tender sincerest sympathy, trusting that the broken circle of home may be united in the home above.
