(Elk City newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 28 February 1924) DEATH OF P. T. BURKS. P. T. Burks, a former citizen of Elk City, died at the home of his son, Chas. Burks, last Friday night February 22nd. His body was prepared for burial and shipped to Enid on Saturday to the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. E. Smith, where funeral services were held on Monday afternoon, and he was laid to rest by the side of his wife who died three years ago the 28th of January. Mr. Burks was born in Pike County, Mo., seventy-six years ago last July. He and his wife lacked but a little over a year of being married fifty years when she died. They were very devoted and her death caused him great grief. It is said that for weeks after she passed away, he walked the floor day and night. Doing this caused a blister to form on one of his feet which went into blood poisoning, and for some time he was in serious condition, but became better and came out here to stay with his son Claude near Sayre. It seemed the trouble was not all eradicated as a few weeks ago he commenced suffering from gangrene in feet, and he was brought to Elk City for treatment, but nothing could be done for him. He was anxious to go to be with his wife and a short time before he died, he reached up his arms and spoke her name as if he could see her. He was a member of the Christian Church for 48 years and was elder in same a number of years. He was a loving and affectionate husband and father. Just before he death he was heard to hum the song "Lead Kindly Light." All his children were with him when he died with exception of one daughter, Mrs. Cora Nichols, of Sterling, who arrived a short time after he passed away. All but Mrs. Nichols and Mrs. Burch of Sayre accompanied the remains to Enid, but Mr. Burch having received a stroke of paralysis, his wife was called home and her sister accompanied her. The children surviving the father are Mrs. C. L. Burch, Sayre, Sayre; Mrs. Eva Walton, Alva, Okla.; Claude Burks, Sayre; Mrs. Cora Nichols, Sterling, Okla.; Charles Burks and Mrs. C. G. Goodwin, Elk City; Mrs. J. E. Smith and Mrs. Ila Glasgow of Enid, Okla. Four children has preceded him, one Ella, who died at Enid four years ago.
