Burwell passed away at her country home, west of Merritt School, Tuesday evening at 11 o'clock, July 24th. Mary Waren (sic) Burwell was born at Waterloo, Ill., March 14, 1869, the daughter of Pete and Mary Kaiser Warren. She was married to O. A. Burwell, September 21, 1921, at Elk City, Oklahoma. Besides the devoted husband she leaves five brothers and three sisters. Two of the sisters were with her during her long illness of seven months. First Mrs. L. P. Olson of Webster Grove, Mo., came and nursed her for several weeks. Then another loved sister, Mrs. Thomas Fleahman of Jonesburg, Mo., came and for ten weeks she nursed and cared for her, as only one who loved deeply, can care for a stricken loved one. As the writer visited in this home often, we marveled at the love and thoughtfulness that was shown this dear patient woman. She loved her home and those who were so near to her. She suffered much, but never complained until a few hours before she passed out of this life. She remarked to her niece, Mrs. Ed Kelly, whom she was fond of and who helped care for her that she could not stand her severe pain much longer. In the past seven months of her illness, Mrs. Burwell spent a month and a half in the local hospital, all was done for her that human skill and love could do. She knew for months that her life on this earth was only a question of a short while. Her spiritual advisor, Rev. Father Geeraert visited her often, and was a great comfort to her. The writer thanked God each time she visited this splendid woman for her faith, and submission to her Lord and Saviour. I would that each one of us might face death with a smile on our lips as this woman did. We are reminded that "Death is the Golden Key that Opens the Palace of Eternity," also "Death is the Liberator of Her Whom Freedom Cannot Release; the Physician of Her Whom Medicine Cannot Cure; the Comfortor of Her Whom Time Cannot Console." "Leaves have their time to fall and flowers to wither at the northwind's breast, and stars to set - but all, thou hast all seasons for thine own, O Death!" Funeral services were held from St. Joseph's Church Thursday morning at 10 o'clock July 26, with Rev. Father Gearaert officiating. The church was filled with neighbors and friends who came to pay their respects. Interment was made in the Calvary Cemetery, the beautiful casket was enclosed in a steel vault and all that was earthly of this good wife and sister was laid to rest in the blest and sacred ground of her faith. The grave was covered with beautiful flowers sent by friends and relatives. The News-Democrat extends sympathy to the husband, the brothers and sisters who live so far away, and to Mrs. Fleahman who will soon return to her home in Missouri. Gentry-Killough were in charge.
