(May 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): The people of our city were grieved Sunday morning to learn that P. B. Carter had passed away the night before. He had not been very well, for some time, but did not give up, and was down town on Friday. On Thursday he attended the funeral of the little babe of Mr. Taulbee and assisted in filling the grave. He lived by himself and on Saturday was discovered by neighbors lying on the doorstep of his home where he had fainted. On calling doctor it was thought operation was necessary and he was taken to hospital. He rallied from the operation and was thought to be on way to recovery when he was taken with a convulsion and passed away. It was found he had cancer of stomach. For many years Mr. Carter was janitor at the Baptist church and also at the school house, and was (blank) by old and young, and the great love and esteem held for him was manifested Sunday afternoon at the funeral services at the Baptist Church as it was crowded to its utmost. The altar and railing was covered in white on which flowers were pinned, and there were also banks of flowers everywhere and on his casket, a tribute of love from the children and friends and members of his Sunday School class. After choir sang "Asleep in Jesus," Rev. J. B. Conley led in prayer, thanking God for such a life one who had been so faithful and a true example of brotherly kindness one who loved God and his church. "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" was sung. Rev. Hamilton read the scripture lesson from 10th chapter of Acts, also gave biography. Two weeks before Mr. Carter gave his seventy-four birthday pennies to go as his contribution to the fund for orphans. He was born May 3, 1850 in West Virginia. Was married to Almira Strator, April 30, 1874. His wife died May 3, 1901. A day or so before he died, the pastor had told him to arrange some signal for fear he should be taken suddenly ill and he would be alone. Mr. Carter remarked "God would know it." He had three sons, one in West Virginia, one in New Mexico, and one in California, also a daughter, Mrs. Hibbs of near Elk City. The pastor told Mr. Carter's clear understanding of Gods word and paid a beautiful tribute to his life. He was a deacon in the church for a number of years and was ever faithful in his work for the church. At the close of 1923 he received an enameled pin with wreath of gold which he had earned for attending Sunday School for one year without missing. The pin was on the lapel of his coat where he had worn it after it had been presented to him. Rev. Hamilton had several members to speak words of tribute to Mr. Carter. G. C. Cornett told how when he was made deacon Mr. Carter placed his hand on his head and said "God bless you." and Mr. Cornett added "what a deacon I have been associated with." R. O. Ward also a deacon, said he could not find words enough to tell appreciation of Mr. Carter. God put him on earth for a service, and if ever a man did service he was put here to do Mr. Carter did it. When stricken with deafness he did not stay away from services but remarked "if I can't hear I count one in number." Lee Harris gave poem of the old man who built bridge that others following might pass on successfully. (29 May 1924, Thursday, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): CORRECTION. In the obituary of P. B. Carter last week, we stated he was by himself at the time he was taken seriously ill, but we must have misunderstood our informant, for Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Hibbs, the latter his daughter, were at his home that day, and when he fainted were right there to look after him calling help immediately. CARD OF THANKS. We wish to thank the neighbors and friends for their kindness and sympathy in illness and death of our father, P. B. Carter. Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Hibbs and family. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
