(31 Aug 1916, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): DEATH OF H. CHADEAYNE. The death of our friend and neighbor, Judge H. Chadeayne, which occurred at 1 o'clock a.m. Friday, Aug. 25th, 1916, marked the passing of one of Elk City's pioneer citizens. He came to Elk City about seventeen years ago, and settled on a farm at the outskirts of the city. On one corner of this farm is now situated the City Cemetery. Mr. Chadeayne was the first lawyer here and was elected as first city attorney. For several years he had virtually retired from the practice of law. He always manifested an interest and contributed largely in the promotion of all the interests of the community. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. and friends say the best addresses they ever heard on the work of that Lodge Mr. Chadeayne gave at one of their celebrations. He was a writer of poems and just recently we had a poem in the News-Democrat that he had written about the Woodman memorial day, in which he spoke of the absent friends who had gone on before. Hiram Chadeayne was born in Long Island, New York, January 19, 1829, and had reached the age of 87 years, 8 months and 6 days. He acquired a common school education, and despite the hardship common in the early day, worked his way through the Garrett Biblical Institute later taking special work in the Northwestern University. He was licensed and ordained in the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal Church, being a member of the Rock River Conference, later the West Wisconsin Conference, rendering valuable service as a preacher and church builder, when at last he gave up his work. He was married to Sarah Andrews, of Maryland, and Mrs. Patty of Elk City is a daughter of this union. His wife died in 1872 in Hutchinson, Kan. He was united in marriage to Mrs. Prudence Bay in 1873 at Cameron, Mo., and her death occurred last December. The funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal Church Sunday afternoon, August 27th, Rev. D. W. Brashear, the pastor, officiating. Rev. Stogner, of the Baptist church read the scripture lesson and Re. J. J. Shaw, of the M. E. Church, South, leading in a very earnest prayer. Rev. Collins, District Superintendent, made the address. The church was crowded with friends who came to pay their last respects to one of our oldest citizens. The members of the I.O.O.F., of which he was a member, escorted the remains from the house to the church, and then to the cemetery, where they had charge of the interment, using the lodge burial service. The many friends extend the deepest sympathy to the bereaved ones. (31 Aug 1916, Elk City Leader, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Hiram Chadeayne, One of First Settlers in This Section Died Friday. After an illness lasting less than one week, Hiram Chadeayne, a pioneer of this section, died last Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. S. Patty, in the northwest part of the city. Mr. Chadeayne had been in ill health for a number of years, but was able to be about the city until Monday of last week, when he was stricken with his last illness, and gradually grew worse until the end came. Mr. Chadeayne was born in Long Island, New York, January 19, 1829. He came to this section at the opening of the country, and was always active in assisting in its development and was widely known in this part of the state. Some time ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis and since than has spent much of his time at home. Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 by Dr. Collins of Oklahoma City, after which the remains were taken in charge by the local lodge Odd Fellows of which deceased was an honored member, and were laid to rest in the Elk City cemetery.
