(24 Jul 1924, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): DEATH OF THOMAS A. CHERRY. Word was received here last Saturday of the death of Thomas A. Cherry, a former citizen of near Elk City, and known to a large number of people, having filed on a claim thirty years ago, on Elk Creek. For some time he has lived with his daughter at Hobart where he died last Saturday, July 19th, being 81 years and 2 months old, having been born May 19th, 1843. His wife who is still living, has been blind for several years and both have been tenderly cared for by their only daughter, Mrs. O'Dell. The body was brought to Elk City Sunday and a number of old friends and neighbors attended the services at the cemetery, which was conducted by Rev. Ostello. Mr. Cherry was a good man, and he was held in the highest respect by all who knew him. He leaves his wife, and seven children, one daughter, Mrs. J. B. O'Dell of Hobart, and six sons, Richard, Thomas, Emmett, Charlie, Mat and Clarence. (25 Jul 1924, The Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): Mr. T. P. (sic) Cherry, an old pioneer settler of the Ural community, died at Hobart on Friday night of last week at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Odell. He had been in bad health for several years and a few days prior to his death he suffered a stroke of paralysis, which caused his death. The remains were brought to Elk City and laid away in that cemetery on Sunday following his death. Mr. Cherry was one of the first settlers of the Ural community. He staked a claim when that part of the country was first opened up for settlement. Of course all the old settlers of the entire country around were well acquainted with him. He was once tax assessor of this county before it was cut off from Roger Mills. He had many friends both in this county and around Sentinel and Hobart where he had spent the last few years of life. Mr. Cherry left a wife and several children, five of them being boys, Tom, Emmit, Richard, Charley and Matt, and one daughter, Mrs. Odell. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
