(20 Oct 1927, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): CITY MARSHALL "MITCH" CHESNEY DIED FRIDAY. Popular Official Succumbs to Illness From Which He Has Suffered for Years. M. R. Chesney, better known to his friends as "Mitch," departed this life last Friday, October 14, 1927, aged 41 years, 3 months and 10 days. Mr. Chesney had not enjoyed good health for several years, being confined to his bed at different times, but he did not let this keep him from an active life, and last spring he entered the race for city marshal. With half a dozen candidates in the field and a late start he won the election by a nice majority, attesting the esteem in which he was held in the city. "Mitch" was in every sense a man, and was loved and respected for the high ideals he cherished, and which were a part of his daily life. As an official he was courteous and had the respect of all. As a mark of respect to his memory Mayor Peeler issued a proclamation closing the business houses during the funeral and a large number were present at the last sad rites. The floral offerings were beautiful and profuse. The funeral was held from the Baptist Church Saturday at 2:30, with Rev. Chas. Lemmex of the First Christian Church officiating, and he was buried with the ritual of the Masonic Lodge, of which he was an honored member. The family have the sincere sympathy of all in their time of sorrow. Gurbitz & Son had charge of the arrangements. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
