Virginia Isabelle Clark was born at Greenville, Texas, April 24th in the year of 1848. Died at Elk City, Oklahoma, May 19th, 1923, at 9:35 a.m. at the age of 75 years and 26 days. Her husband died many years ago, leaving her with four little children, three boys and one daughter, who are Mackie Roberta, Elk City; Guy Howell, Tulsa, Okla., Perry Burch, Elk City and Roscoe Bayard of Tulsa. She became a member of the Presbyterian church when living at Greenville, but two years ago placed her membership in Elk City church. As Rev. Tracy was away Rev. DeVore was asked to conduct the funeral services, which was held in the home Sunday morning at nine o'clock. Though it was threatening weather, the rooms were filled with friends and sympathizers, bespeaking the esteem in which she was held. Beautiful flowers, she loved so dearly, were banked around the room sent by friends from far and near. The Presbyterian choir sang at the beginning and close of service. Rev. DeVore paid a beautiful tribute to Mother Clark, and speaking especially of her brave battle in life, when left with four little children to raise. She had ever looked after their welfare. Through her last illness she made a heroic fight, not simply just to live but that she might be of service to those she loved. Truly hers was an unselfish life, for she never refused to respond to neighbors and friends who were sick or in need of any assistance within her power to give and to such tasks she gave herself without reserve. We will ever remember her kindness and help when our little granddaughter passed away a few years ago. Then, too, when the first Fair was held in Elk City and Aunt Alice though living on farm was a superintendent. We stopped at the Clark rooming house and have never forgotten the kindness shown us during that week by Mother Clark and her daughter. She loved her friends and after the days work was over she would sit on chair in front of home so that she could see them as they passed by. She always greeted them with a smile and they will miss her very much from her accustomed place. Mother Clark was a woman of retiring and quiet disposition and very domestic in habits and taste. Her realm was her home. No mother was ever more devoted. On her going she leaves the sweet memory of a fond affection, helpful words and a life of good works. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
