COLE ANSWERS LAST CALL. One of our old-time citizens is gone out of our midst. We see his face no more with us. But such is not the case with our memory of him for we feel the vacancy left by his departure and being absent from us. Abram R. Cole was born in Franklin county, Alabama, September 16, 1844. He departed this life at his home in Blanchard, Okla., March 26, 1925, making him at his death 89 years and six months of age. Mr. Cole was a soldier during the War of the Rebellion, and served with the union armies 3 years and 9 months. He was united in marriage to Nancy Caroline Martin, June 24, 1880, at Leon, I. T. Five children were born to this marriage, three boys and two girls, of which one girl has proceded the father to the Heavenly home. In his early married life he professed a faith in Jesus Christ, and joined the Methodist church. He was a respected citizen, a kind father and husband, and a good neighbor. He will be missed. For years he had been rather feeble. The cause of his departure was extreme old age rather than anything else, he having come to the ripe age of eighty years. Tender hands and medical skill did their best for him. But the time comes when human power can do no more. Loving friends came in to help and watch at the bedside, and all was done that could be done. The remains were interred in the Blanchard cemetery, Friday, March 27, at 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. After this the Masonic brethren took charge of the service using the form that the Masonic lodge always uses. This for the main part was read by Mr. P. C. Lackey. He was assisted by Mr. Lester Sharp, R. F. Puckett and others, and it was a very beautiful and impressive service, and was well rendered. The Masons taking part in the obsequies were as follows: P. C. Lackey, Acting Master; R. F. Puckett, Chaplain; Lester Sharp, Junior Warden; W. T. Shepherd, Senior Warden; Harley Foreston, Steward; Sidney Barnes, Steward; A. O. Maddox, Deacon; Harry Daniels, Deacon; W. F. Diamond, Bible-bearer. The pall-bearers were Dr. W. S. Hames, F. B. Kirby, R. C. Hughes, J. S. Gordon, Sam Foster and Tom Murray. Other Masons were present and filed by the graveside casting in a sprig of evergreen that sympolizes that thought our brother is gone, the memory of him would every remain green. Very beautiful wreaths adorned the mound of our brother, after the interment. We extend to the bereaved loved ones, our deepest sympathy, and hope we have been of some help to them. - --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm Contributed.
