All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************ COLEMAN, J. H. (26 Jun 1924, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): J. H. Coleman was born December 23, 1839 in Hickman County, Tenn. Died at the home of his son, J. R. Coleman, north of Doxey, Okla., June 12, 1924, at the age of 84 years, 5 months, 20 days. He was converted while young and joined the Baptist church. On March 20th, 1862, he was united in marriage to Miss S. K. Spencer who with three children survive. Two other children, Mrs. H. B. Bell and Miss Ella Coleman preceded him to that other world a number of years ago. The living are, Mrs. Addie Hedge of Weatherford; W. W. Coleman of Bridgeport, Texas; J. R. Coleman, of Doxey, 17 grandchildren, one brother and one sister survive him. When the war of 1862 came he enlisted in the Infantry, later he was made captain of the 42nd Tennessee Cavalry. He served throughout the war. His early life was spent in teaching school He moved with his family from Tennessee to Texas and lived there twelve years then came to Oklahoma in 1899 and helped hold down a claim. Mr. Coleman was a great help to a community helping wherever he might. He was loved and respected by the old and young. Funeral services were conducted June 13 by Rev. Stigler of the Sayre Baptist Church at the Doxey-Sayre Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Hedge of Weatherford and several members of their family were present but the son W. S.
