(15 Apr 1926, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Mr. Owen Combs of Canute died suddenly last Thursday and was buried Friday afternoon. He was about 89 years of age, and had been a resident of this community a long time. (22 Apr 1926, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City Beckham Co, OK): OBITUARY. Owen Thomas Combs was born in Kentucky, June 6, 1837, and departed this life at the home of his son, Pressby Combs, April 8, 1926, being 88 years, 10 months and 2 days of age. Mr. Combs emigrated with his parents to Monroe County, Missouri when a boy and he grew to manhood in that state. He was married to Miss Lucy Davis in 1863. To this union eleven children were born, nine sons and two daughters. One daughter and five sons survive him. Mrs. Combs preceeded her husband in death on April 10, 1925. In 1901 Mr. Combs (Uncle Owen as he was familiarly called) moved from Missouri to Washita County, Oklahoma, and filed on land near Canute where he resided until he moved to Canute some few years back. He served as a confederate soldier during the entire period of the Civil war. He was a man of sterling qualities honorable in his dealings with his fellow-man, industrious, a loving husband and father and an excellent neighbor and will be missed by all who knew him. He was by nature a frontiersman. At the close of the civil war he embarked in the ox train freighting business, working between Leavenworth, Kansas and Fort Union, New Mexico. His experience as a freighting master with the vicissitudes that the early freighters met would, if put in to book form, produce a volume of inestimable worth, entertainment and historical facts. Not over a month ago, "Uncle Owen" made an afternoon call at our home and among his remarks he said: "I have finished my work and am ready to pass on." - By A. M. Bradfield. CARD OF THANKS. We wish to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to the many friends and neighbors whose assistance and sympathy was appreciated during the sickness and death of our beloved father. Mr. and Mrs. Pres. Combs, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Combs, Mr. and Mrs. Cleve Combs, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Combs, Mrs. Stella Mayberry, Leslie Combs. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
