Fred Bland Cotton, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Cotton, was born May 20, 1899, and departed this life September 28, 1921. Fred had been complaining for some time, but he did not seem to be in a serious condition until about ten days before his death. After completing common school he attended an automobile college in Kansas City from which he graduated. To make his education of use he was building a garage which was not quite completed at the time of his death. His mother has been in the sanitarium at Elk City afflicted with typhoid fever for some time and only arrived fifteen minutes before Fred died. As she saw her son dying she fell on her knees by his bedside and prayed that he might give his heart to God before he died. Fred also prayed and five minutes before his departure from this earth he gave his mother a few comforting words of hope. The pall bearers were Oscar Yell, Horace Coffee, John Kelsey, Gib Twitty, Cecil Ginn, and Homer Coffee. He will be greatly missed in our community, especially by all the young people. But most of all by his family of which he was so dear. If he ever had an enemy the writer has failed to know it. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Miss Essie Oburne Methodist Evangelist who was holding a revival at Sweetwater. On account of inclement weather and other sickness in the home it was necessary that they hold the services in Freds garage, which was very comfortable, and accommodated the people nicely. After the services he was taken to the Brookside cemetery about three quarters of a mile from his home where he was layed (sic) to rest. He leaves a father, mother, two sisters and five brothers besides a host of friends and relatives to mourn his departure. A Friend.
