(14 Jan 1917, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Death of Chas. D. Cowden. In poor health for several months, the end came to this well known citizen of our town, Monday afternoon of this week, and funeral services were held in the First Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. W. W. Stogner, pastor of the Baptist Church and Rev. M. T. Allen, pastor of the M. E. Church, South. The Brotherhood of American Yoemen (sic) of which Mr. Cowden was a member, had charge of the services at the Cemetery. Mr. Cowden had been a resident of this community for many years and was one of the best liked men among our citizens, because of his friendly disposition and readiness to help, even to the point of self-sacrifice, all who were sick, in need, or in trouble. In many instances he has been known to carry sick people to his own home and care for them in the most generous manner until they recovered, without reimbursement or reward. The large concourse of friends, including many of the leading citizens of the town, who attended his funeral attested the bright place he had won in the affections of his acquaintances, and which neither trouble nor adversity could obscure. He is survived by his wife and one full brother, V. H. Cowden, of Kansas City, and several half brothers, who names we did not get. He had no children of his own, but had taken into his home three orphan children, Lee Claude and Edith Fisher, whom he and Mrs. Cowden cared for as faithfully as if they were their own, and to whom his memory will ever be bright and sweet. The sincere sympathy of the entire community goes to his bereaved wife and brother and other relatives, and the lessons of his life are well worthy of consideration by all who live to the best advantage, and remembering that "we pass this way but once," try to do some good to others as the days are going by. Rev. Stogner. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
