Her husband and four sons survive here, the boys being Roy, Vincil, Earl and Virgil; also her mother, Mrs. Frances M. Carleton who has been living with her. Mrs. Cowherd was a good Christian woman, and had a large circle of friends and acquaintances who grieve because of the loss of one they loved and respected. The sorrowing ones have the sympathy of all in this sad hour. (20 Sep 1923, Thursday, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): TRIBUTE BY PASTOR. Mrs. Alpha O. Sister Cowherd was converted in early life and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In these years she was faithful to God, the church and her duty in life. She was a sweet christian and all who knew her loved her. She was heard to say often, "Jesus, Blessed Jesus." The writer visited her many times during her last illness. She was uncomplaining, sweet and patient to the end. The funeral services were held in the home. A great concourse of people were at the funeral. The remains were laid to rest in the well kept and beautiful Fairlawn cemetery under a bank of flowers. Much can be said of the sympathy of the neighborhood, as everyone who knew her loved her. She is gone to be with God and the Angels. May God's Blessing be upon her loved ones left behind, is the prayer of her pastor, J. W. Williams. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
