(1 Apr 1926, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): John Cresswell (sic) was born Nov. 5th, 1853, in Carroll County, Mo., and died at his home in Elk City, March 30th, 1926, at the age of 72 years, 4 months, and 25 days. In the year 1875 he was married to Miss Mattie M. Zinn at Norben, Mo. To this union were born ten children. Three of these died in infancy and one daughter, Mrs. Ella Creswell Price, also died March 1st, 1917. One daughter, Mrs. Mollie Carpenter of Hico, Texas, and the following sons are now living: T. H., J. L., and O. L. Creswell of Hammon, J. T. Creswell of Elk City, and D. O. Creswell of Long Beach, Cal. Also his wife Mrs. Mattie Z. Creswell survives him, she being at this time 71 years old. Four of the sons were at his bedside when he passed away, and the daughter arrived a few minutes later. The son in California was unable to be present. Mr. Creswell was converted at the age of thirty-eight, and joined the Cole Spring Baptist Church in Texas County, Mo., to which he was a very faithful member. In the year 1889 he moved with his family to Chickasaw Territory, and as soon as Oklahoma was opened up for settlement, he filed upon a claim near Bessie, Okla. Here he was a successful farmer for many years, having accumulated a neat sum to tide him over his old age. After his health began to decline he and wife moved to Elk City where they could be near their married children. They purchased a neat little home on sixth street, where they lived comfortably until his death. Last year Mr. Creswell and wife transferred their church membership to the First Baptist Church of Elk City. They have been exceptionally good members, full of faith and good works. They have been a blessing to the whole church, and he will be greatly missed from the congregation on Sunday mornings. John Creswell was a man of strict integrity, moral blamelessness, and true christian faithfulness in all things. Truly, he has "kept the faith" and reaped the reward of the faithful in Christ Jesus. He was highly respected as a citizen, honored and loved as a neighbor, husband, father and a brother in Christ with the gentleness of a mother and the faith of an Apostle. One of the old guard has passed from us to leave the sweet aroma of a simple, unpretentious, faithful christian life. To his aged wife and several children and many grand-children, and to all his relatives and sorrowing friends we hereby extend brotherly sympathy and commend them to the God of him who has gone from us to his eternal home. CARD OF THANKS We take this method of expressing our thanks to our friends and neighbors for their kindness to us during the illness and death of our dear husband, father and uncle. May God bless each and everyone of the. We want to thank the B.Y.P.U. for their beautiful floral offering. Mrs. Mattie Creswell, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Cresswell (sic) and family, Mr. and Mrs. T. H.
