(7 Apr 1927, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Mrs. Mattie M. Zinn Creswell was born in Carroll County, Mo., June 18, 1854. Died at the home of her oldest son, Tom, in Hammon, Okla., April 1, 1927. Age 72 years, 9 months, 13 days. She was married to John Creswell February 28, 1875, to which they celebrated their golden anniversary. To this union was born ten children, three of whom died in infancy, and a daughter, Mrs. Ella Price, who died in 1917. She left five sons, Tom, Joe and Oscar of Hammon, Dave of Long Beach, Calif., and Jim of Elk City, and one daughter, Mrs. Molly Carpenter, of Hico, Texas. She was grandmother to twenty children, and twice great-grandmother. Thirty-eight years ago she came with her family to the Indian Territory, locating near what is now Purcell. When Oklahoma was opened for settlement in 1889, they filed on a claim near Bessie. They moved to Elk City in 1919. When she was 18 years old she was converted and joined the Baptist Church, of which she was a faithful member. She was preceded in death by her husband one year and one day.
