Again the Death of Angel has entered our midst and taken from us Grandmother Davis, a sweet, loveable old lady who had come to make her home among us. Tabitha Jane Elder was born in Knoxville, Tenn., July 17, 1833. Her parents moved to the state of Iowa when she was a small girl. Here she grew to womanhood. She was first married to Leander Smith and to this union two children were born, one of these, Mrs. Eliza White of Elk City, Okla., survive her. Mr. Smith died in 1854 and in 1860 she was married to Wesley J. Davis, and to this union two children were born. One son is now living in New Mexico. Grandmother Davis was left a widow the second time last January (1917). When a small girl she professed conversion and united with the Christian church and later with the Methodist, in which church she lived for more than sixty years. She was a sufferer for many years but she was ever patient and cheerful in her affliction. With her smiling face and kindly deeds, she made the days brighter and happier for someone. Never a thought for herself, but of the joy she could bring to her friends and loved ones. Grandmother Davis was one of the pioneers of this country. Grandfather Davis having made the "run" in the opening of the Cherokee Strip. They settled in Dewey county where they lived for more than twenty-five years. Enduring all the hardships of the early days. Later they came to Elk City where they spent five years. Last September they moved to New Mexico to again begin life on the frontier, but the husband lived only a few months and Grandmother had come back to spend the remainder of her days with her daughter Mrs. White. She had been here only about a month when a cough which she had contracted in New Mexico, and which medical treatment did not relieve, finally wore her life away. The end came May 26, 1917, as peacefully and resignedly as her life had been lived. Her last words being, "God is a just God." Words at this time can convey but little comfort, but death is only the sunset, followed by a glorious day that has no end. We know the pure noble life she lived will be helpful to her loved ones in this life and reach out into Eternity. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. M. T. Allen at the M. E. Church, South, Sunday afternoon. Interment was made in East Fairlawn, with Grubitz & Son in charge. Another soul has passed into the Great Beyond , but she has received a crown of righteousness in exchange for a noble, christian life. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
