(1 Nov 1928, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Mrs. Mattie A. Deering, mother of Mrs. J. R. Brooks of Elk City, died in Elk City October 30, 1928, at the age of 72 years, 3 months and 27 days. Funeral services were held at Grubitz and Son funeral home. Rev. E. C. Webb of the Broadway Methodist church officiated at the services. The body was shipped to Nevada, Mo., for burial. Grubitz and Son, funeral directors, had charge of the arrangements. Mattie A. Preston Deering was born in Adair county, Kentucky, July 3, 1856, died October 30, 1928, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. R. Brooks, near Elk City, Okla. She was married to James W. Deering at Winston, Mo., March 30, 1879. To this union four children were born, two of whom died in infancy. She leaves to mourn her departure, two daughters, Mrs. D. H. Belt of Waukomis, Okla., and Mrs. J. R. Brooks, of Elk City, Okla.; two grandchildren, Nagauld and Loren Belt of Waukomis, Okla.; three sisters, Mrs. T. E. Roberts and Miss Lila Preston of Nevada, Mo., Mrs. Julia Tarply of Tecumseh, Okla., and one brother, Wm. Preston of Nevada, Mo. Her husband preceded her to the great beyond, three years ago, and since that time she has made her home with her two daughters. She united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Harwood Mo., in 1898 and lived an ever faithful Christian life. Funeral services were held at Grubitz & Son Funeral Home, Rev. E. C. Webb officiating. A quartet composed of A. G. Steele, W. A. Rayfield, Mrs. Walter Baber, and Mrs. J. C. Weaver rendered beautiful music.
