All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************ DEVANNEY, P. J. (5 Aug 1930, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): P. J. Devanney, 47, prominent businessman of Sayre, died suddenly at his home in that city at 9 o'clock this morning after an illness of several months. He had been suffering since January, but he was thought improving slightly. The change for the worse was unexpected. Mr. Devanney moved to Sayre 17 years ago when he entered the mercantile business. He has been active in civic affairs up until his recent illness. He was a charter member of the Rotary club in Sayre, was a member of the chamber of commerce and was affiliated with numerous other organizations. During the World War period Mr. Devanney was instrumental in promoting various movements in this city and was one of the most active workers in the campaign supervised by the government, friends recall. Mr. Devanney was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic church in Sayre. Funeral services are pending the arrival of relatives, but it is understood that the rites will be read in the Sayre church with Rev. Father A. Geeraert, of this city, officiating. Interment will be made in the Sayre-Doxey cemetery, it was announced. Surviving Mr. Devanney are Mrs. Devanney and three sons, Tom, Phil, Jr., and Louis, his mother and a brother. His mother, who lives in Philadelphia, will be unable to attend the service, but the brother in Dennison, Texas, and all of the sons will be present it was learned. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Devanney, who live in Dallas, Texas, will arrive in Sayre this evening.
