John Miley Dill was born in Columbia, Mo., July 25th, 1858, and died in Elk City, Okla., October 2nd, 1919. At the opening of the Cheyenne and Arapaho country, he filed on a claim near the present town of Cloud Chief. After having spent several years in Oklahoma he returned to his native state, Missouri. In 1901 he came back to Elk City and resided here about ten years again returning to his old home town, Ashland, Mo. Because of the severe winters there, Mr. Dill returned to Elk City about eighteen months ago and remained here until his death. When a young man, Mr. Dill followed the barber's trade, but later went to Oklahoma City, taking a course as an optician and followed that work in his later life. Mr. Dill became Master Mason March 24th 1897, at Hallsville, Mo., joining the Knight Templar's at Elk City. He was buried in his Knight Templar uniform. The deceased was a home loving man, and a good husband. Nine years ago he took Lyle Hagans, a little motherless nephew in his home and had been like a father to him giving him good advise and assisting him in every way to secure an education and make of him a good citizen. Mr. Dill was well and favorably known here, and the very large crowd in attendance at the funeral was proof of the high esteem in which he was held by our citizens. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. C. C. Yankin, of Sedalia, Mo., (by former marriage) by his present wife to whom he was married 26 years ago, nephew Lyle Hagans, three sisters, Mrs. Sappington, Fort Smith, Ark., Mrs. M. H. McQueen, Cushing, Okla., and Mrs. A. N. Martin, Elk City, and a brother, J. E. Dill, of Stover, Mo. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon. The Knight Templars and members of the A.F. & A.M. marched in front of the Grubitz motor hearse, in which the body and many lovely flowers were carried to the cemetery. At the grave the beautiful Masonic burial services was held. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
