E. Elliott, of Drumright, Okla., who were former residents of Elk City, passed into the great beyond on Friday, August 29. Thelma was born at Waukaumis, Okla., June 25, 1911, and was thus thirteen years, two months and four days old. The young lady spent most of her life in Elk City, having come here when she was a tiny baby and remaining here until a little more than a year ago, when she went to her new home in Drumright. Little Miss Elliott possessed a sweet disposition and was loved by all who knew her, perhaps this was because as she said "I love every one else." Frequently she was referred to, by teachers and friends, as "Little Sunshine." Thelma was a regular attendant at and a good student in our public schools. She was also very faithful in her attendance at the Presbyterian Bible school, as the gold button, which she wore even unto the last, signified. In July, Thelma Geneva came to Elk City to visit with relatives and friends. A few days after returning home she complained of being ill, and took to her bed. It was soon discovered that she was suffering from typhoid fever, and this disease with complications was the cause of her death. She was very patient and sweet through all her suffering. In her last hours, when she seemed to realize that the end was near, now and then she would break forth in song in a clear sweet tone and sing such songs as "If Jesus goes with me I'll go" and "The Old Rugged Cross." A short service was held in Drumright by Mr. Runyan, the pastor of the church there and services here were held at the First Christian Church of Elk City and was conducted by the local pastor, Chas. H. Lemmex. The church was beautifully decorated with many and various kinds of flowers and ferns. The music was rendered by a choir made up of singers from the various churches. The song "If Jesus Goes With Me I'll Go" touched the hearts of all as it was sung. The scripture that was read was from Mark 5:22-24; 35-48, and the sermon was preached from the account of David as he passed through the sickness and death of his child. The church was filled with friends and neighbors who came in the hour of sorrow to show their sympathy and to pay their last respects to one whom they had known and loved. A large number went to the cemetery where a short final service was held. C. H. Lemmex. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
