(21 Oct 1926, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Mrs. Dixon English Dead. The many friends of Mrs. Dixon English will regret to learn of her death Tuesday at the home of her sister in Longworth, Texas. Mrs. English had lived near Grimes for over (sic) and was loved and respected by all. The body arrived here today and was taken to Dempsey cemetery for burial. A number of former Grimes citizens living here accompanied the body to cemetery where funeral services were held. (4 Nov 1926, Sayre Journal, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): News came to us last week of the death of Mrs. Sallie English of Texas, formerly of Grimes. The body was shipped back to Elk City and laid to rest in the Dempsey cemetery near Grimes. We are very sad to hear of the death of an old friend as Mrs. English has been. (4 Nov 1926, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Sallie E. Lyon was born in Tennessee March 6, 1845. When a young girl she moved with her parents to Hill County, Texas. She was married to Dixon English in Brazos County, Texas and thirty-five years ago they moved to Oklahoma settling in Roger Mills county, near what was then known as Grimes. She died in Longworth, Texas, October 19, 1926, aged 81 years, 7 months and 13 days. Funeral services were held at Longworth on October 21st in the home of her sister, Mrs. Anne Carter, after which the body was shipped to Elk City, accompanied by Mrs. Carter and sister-in-law, Mrs. Lyon of Dalhart, Texas. A number of friends from Grimes neighborhood came to Elk City to meet the funeral party. They were joined with many former Grimes people living in Elk City and later all followed the hearse to the Dempsey cemetery where services were held, conducted by Rev. Davis of Cheyenne and Rev. Williams of Sayre. The early settlers will ever remember the happy times enjoyed in the dugout home of the English family, which they made when they first moved here, and rejoiced with them when they built their nice home on the farm. Twenty-five years ago while in the dugout, "Aunty Mays" joined the family circle. Mr. English died ten years ago and Mrs. English sold the farm retaining several acres near the road where she had a home built and where she and Aunty Mays lived until the latter's death in April, 1925, at the age of ninety-three years. Aunty Mays had been an invalid for many years but was given every care and attention by Mrs. English. Their many neighbors and friends also looked after them in sickness and health for they seemed to belong to them all. Mrs. English was a member of the M. E. Church, South, and ever lived a true christian life. Mrs. English was also a member of the Sayre chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy. (17 Mar 1905, Sayre Standard, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Grimes Community News: Several birthdays have been enjoyed at Grimes lately. On the 5th about twenty or more of the friends of Mrs. Dixon English surprised her by calling after the Sunday afternoon services. She gave all a royal welcome and was very much pleased over the surprise. All joined in singing the good old hymns, and several talks were given after which all joined hands and sang, "God be with you till we meet again," and French Lancaster closed the service by a word of prayer. Mrs. Mary Maize had made a birthday cake for her neice (sic), Mrs. English, and it was passed around for all to enjoy. No one is better loved at Grimes than Mrs. English, and she has hosts of friends who join in with us in wishing her many, many happy returns of the day. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
