He contracted tuberculosis at Camp McClellan, Ala., a few months after enlisting in the army and in the spring of 1917 was discharged on account of disability. Since that time everything possible has been done, even a trip to Alamagordo, N. M., where he spent 18 months, but he became gradually weaker and for the past seventeen months has been confined to bed. Mrs. Gerbitz, who has taken care of him for the past several months, said she never had a better patient. He was so anxious to get well and was willing to do anything she thought was best for him. He leaves an aged father, R. Finnell of Sentinel, two brothers, F. M. and C. G. Finnell of Canute, and four sisters, Mrs. Pearl Gates of Beaver county, Mrs. Nellie Cecil of California, Mrs. Sallie Hinkle of Canute and Mrs. Maggie Mitcham of Sentinel. The mother died in May 1917. John William Finnell was born Dec 13, 1896, in Winchester, Ky., and moved with his family to Oklahoma in 1902, where he lived until his death, Oct. 26, 1920. The body was laid to rest in the Port cemetery last Wednesday, Oct. 27. Funeral services were in charge of Rev. Ellis, Methodist pastor of Port. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
