George French, or Grandpa French as he was known to his friends, was born at the town of Milton, England, January 12, 1833, died November 30, 1919. He was married to Miss Mary Ann Edwards in London, January 13, 1857. Five children were born of this union, one dying in infancy. Those who survive are Mrs. J. Y. Jones of Doxey, Okla.; Mrs. D. E. Shaffer of Thackerville, Okla.; Mrs. Lydia S. Kinsoling of Portland, Oregon, and George E. French of Roswell, New Mexico. At the time of his death he was making his home with Mrs. J. Y. Jones, and all that a devoted daughter and family could do, was done to make his last hours pleasant. Grandpa was a devout christian, having been brought up in the Episcopal church, but in later years he became a member of the Baptist church, holding membership at Sayre at the time of his death. He took pleasure in reading his Bible, trusting in the truths found therein, at all times looking forward to that home beyond the grave, where loved ones awaited his coming. Two years after their marriage, he and wife emigrated to New Zealand, and after living there ten years came to America and settled on a farm in Crawford county, Missouri, in 1868 moved from there to Texas in 1872 making that state his home until after the death of his wife twelve years ago when he came to Oklahoma to make his home with his children. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
