(26 Jun 1924, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): DEATH OF MRS. GALE. Mrs. F. R. Gale died Tuesday evening following an illness of several months. She had not been well since last September when she underwent a major operation from which she never fully recovered, and her death was not unexpected by her relatives and close friends who have been with her during her long serious illness. A host of friends join us in extending sympathy to the grief stricken husband who cared for her so tenderly during her suffering, the little sons, who will miss a Mother's loving care and the Mother and father and other relatives. Barbara Payne was born at Fayetteville, Ark., January 27, 1894 and at the age of six years moved with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Payne, to Foss, Oklahoma, where she spent her girlhood, graduating from the public school there in 1910. On December 6, 1912, she was married to F. R. Gale and to this union were born two children, Russell, who is now eight years old and Bobbie, six. The family moved from Foss to Leedey and three years ago moved to Elk City. Mrs. Gale was converted and united with the Methodist church at Foss when a young girl and her life since then has been one of service and devotion to her God. She was very active in all church work and during her illness expressed the desire many times that she wanted to get well so that she could help in building the new church. She was a sufferer for many months, spending much of the time since last September in the hospital, although during the early summer, her health improved so much that her family and friends were hopeful of her recovery but she was taken seriously ill a couple of weeks ago and it was necessary for her to undergo another operation last Saturday, from which she never recovered. Her death occurred the following Tuesday evening. Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church, South, Friday afternoon where a large circle of friends gathered to pay their last respects to the memory of one whose life has been an example of the pure and good. The scripture was read by Rev. J. A. Tracy, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, and a poem was read by Rev. E. D. Hamilton of the Baptist church. Besides the husband and children the deceased leaves to mourn her departure, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Payne, five sisters, Mrs. F. B. Hoover, Mrs. E. G. Spaith, Mrs. Lydia O'Dell, Mrs. Paul Snyder and Miss Eilean Payne all of Dinuba, California, three brothers, Elmer and Almond Payne of Dinuba, California and Clarence Payne of Tipton. The Mother, one sister, Mrs. F. E. Hoover and the brother Clarence, attended the funeral. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
