All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************ GARDNER, ARTHUR LAHUGH (26 Dec 1924, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): The news of the sudden death of Hugh Gardner on Wednesday morning was quite a shock to his friends for many did not know he was sick, and some knew he had started on a trip to see some friends only two days before, but because of having trouble with car returned home. He did not feel well but was not thought to be in any danger. His death was caused from heart failure. Mr. Gardner was for years the engineer at the Ice Plant and the past season was at Hope & Haney Gin. He was known as one of the very best engineers in this section. He would have been forty-two years old the 4th of January. He leaves a wife and two children, a son Oscar, and daughter, Thelma, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Gardner of Anadarko and four sisters and four brothers: Mrs. S. Low, Anadarko, Mrs. Sowders, Oklahoma City, Mrs. Gibbons, Galveston, Texas and Mrs. Ford of Shamrock, Texas, A. W. Gardner, Austin, Texas, John B. Gardner, Galveston, Texas, J. M. Gardner, Drumright and Bryan Gardner, Anadarko. The sisters from Oklahoma City and Shamrock and his brothers J. B., J. M., and Bryan were here to attend the funeral. Awaiting arrival of other relatives the funeral will not be held until Saturday afternoon at the Christian Church conducted by C. H. Lemmex, the pastor. Mr. Gardner was a member of the Elks Club, also the W.O.W. (2 Jan 1925, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Arthur Lahugh Gardner was born near Hillside, West Virginia, January 4th 1893 (cemetery has 1883). He moved to Hagansville, Missouri, when a boy and from there to Tonkawa, Okla., until 1901 when he moved to Anadarko, Okla. Mr. Gardner had lived in Elk City since Oct. 1912. He worked for the Elk City Ice, Fuel and Light Co., for nine years as an expert mechanic. At the time of his death he was employed at the Hope & Haney Gin as engineer. His death was caused from apoplexy. He had not felt well for thirty-six hours before the attack. Those who are left to mourn his death are: his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Gardner of Anadarko; four brothers, W. A. Gardner of Austin, Texas; John B. Gardner of Galveston; J. M. Gardner of Drumright, and Bryan Gardner of Anadarko. Four sisters, Mrs. Harry P. Lowe, Mrs. Mary Sowders, Mrs. Ada P. Giebner, and Jennie Ford. Also a number of nieces and nephews, a devoted wife, a son, Oscar, and a daughter, Louise. Funeral services were held at the First Christian Church at 2:30 o'clock December 27, Rev. Lemmex preached the funeral. Mrs. R. L. Reid sang a beautiful solo. The W.O.W.'s had charge of the burial service. Mr. Gardner was converted and baptised at Anadarko, Okla., in 1907, and had been a member of the Christian Church for seventeen years, fourteen of which he was a member of the First Christian Church of this city. A host of friends attended the funeral. Among the large number of beautiful floral offerings were those from the Elk's Lodge of which he was a member, also W.O.W.
