Gilbert, born April 10, 1892, at Martinsville, Illinois, died at Oklahoma City, at 5:15 A.M. October 30, 1920, aged 28 years, 6 months and 20 days. Edgar came with his parents, James F. and Nelia A. Gilbert and older brother, Elmer, and younger sister, Pearl, now Mrs. Roland Hill of Denton, Texas, in 1903 to Oklahoma, stopping a few months in Weatherford before locating on his father's homestead, 12 miles northwest of Rankin Oklahoma, where he lived most of his life, working on the farm and attending the district school in winter until early manhood when he became head farmer. On August 4, 1918, he enlisted at Cheyenne, Oklahoma, in the U. S. army and was sent to Camp Fremont, California, remaining there about three months, and was sent to New York City just before the Armistice was signed October (sic) 11, 1918. Edgar was ordered on shipboard four times and as many times countermanded. After a few weeks at Camp Mills, Long Island, he was transferred to Camp Lee, near Petersburg, Virginia, and was honorably discharged at Camp Funston, Kansas, in January 1919, arriving at home soon afterwards. Edgar completed a course in an Automobile school in Oklahoma City but was not able to follow his trade. His illness seems short. Edgar spent last Fourth of July with us at a picnic at Bechtold's Grove with promise of a long and useful life before him, but the Lord has ordered otherwise. Edgar was converted while in the Camp and died happy in the faith, saying, "I will meet you in the morning." Funeral services were conducted by Elder George F. Martin in the Rankin church at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, October 30, 1920, during a heavy downpour of rain. A large crowd of neighbors and friends followed in mournful procession to the burial in the Rankin cemetery. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
