(11 Oct 1928, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Mr. J. F. (Joe) Gillentine, pioneer settler of Elk City community, died October 5, 1928, at Elk City after an illness of several weeks. He was 69 years, 11 months and 9 days old. Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ Saturday, October 6 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. John C. Carman officiating. Interment was made at Pleasant Valley cemetery with Gentry-Killough in charge. Mr. Gillentine came to Oklahoma in 1898 and homesteaded four miles east of Elk City. He has lived near this place for thirty years. He was a member of the Church of Christ and had been a Christian for forty-seven years. He has lived an upright life and was loved by a large circle of friends. Those who survive him are his wife, Mrs. J. T. Gillentine; five daughters, Mrs. J. W. Hughens, Atlanta, Ga.; Mrs. C. B. Lester and Mrs. J. T. Franks of Elk City; Mrs. Lula Dodson of Strong City; Mrs. R. J. McLemore of Oklahoma City; one son, T. B. Gillentine, Elk City; one sister, Mrs. Florence Barton, Rochester, Texas, and twenty-three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
