(14 Jun 1913, Thursday, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Death of Mrs. B. D. Griggs The many relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. B. D. Griggs were shocked to learn of the death of Mrs. Griggs, a devoted wife and mother. Mrs. Griggs had been in poor health for some time but seemed to be improving until a few hours before death came. Mrs. Griggs was the mother of eight living children, having two infants deceased. The children were summoned and each came, some coming from a distance to be with the loving mother in the last few hours on this earth. Every little touch of love and thankfulness were shown by Mr. Griggs and the children as they prepared the mother for the greater and better world of rest. Services were held from the Griggs home here Sunday noon, officiated by the Rev. Yeakle of Brinkman, Oklahoma, and a large number of friends were present to pay their last respects to the deceased wife and mother. The body, in charge of Mr. Greer, undertaker with the C. P. Hamilton Undertaking Company of Mangum, was taken to Mangum on the 2:35 train, accompanied by the children and husband and a few Carter friends. The many Mangum friends of the Griggs family met the company and they were escorted to the First Baptist church where a very beautiful and impressive service was held by Rev. R. C. Miller. The floral offering was immense and very beautiful. Interment was made in the Mangum cemetery, Sunday evening, June the 10th, 1923. Card of Thanks We wish to extend to our friends who were so dear to us during the sickness and death of our dear devoted wife and mother, our greatest thanks and love, and may we some day be able to share your joy or sorrow. The floral offerings were beautiful and so full of meaning and every flower and act was a drop of love from a dear friend. May God bless you. B. D. Griggs, husband; J. F. Griggs, O. K. Griggs, and Ralph Griggs, sons; Nettie F. James, Katie A. Gamblin, Maude Burt, May Gould and Lillian Lunden, daughters; Mrs. Hattie Lawrence, only sister. (21 Jun 1923, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): OBITUARY. Mrs. B. D. Griggs was born in Henry County, Georgia, February the 26th, 1862. At the age of twelve she was converted and joined the Baptist church. Mr. and Mrs. Griggs met when very young and married on February the 8th, 1876 in Cobb county, Georgia, and have lived a christian life together for forty-seven years. Mrs. Griggs, as Mr. Griggs always shall remember her as just his "little sweetheart" from the time they met until she was called to the greater world of rest and now his sweetheart has gone but still lives in his life and in the life of her children and home. During the time of Mrs. Griggs' sickness and after death the hands of her children and husband were busy doing things for her that they knew would please her and show the great debt they owed such a devoted mother and wife. Mr. and Mrs. Griggs came to Texas from Georgia, thirty years ago and moved to Oklahoma twenty years ago and have lived in Carter for ten years, during this time they have made many friends who extend to the bereaved husband and children their deepest sympathy at this time of deep sorrow. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
