Obit of Charles Bartlett Harless CHARLES BARTLETT HARLESS Posted by Joan (DeFore) Garvey for Elk City Library Elk City Paper, Beckham Co., OK March 25, 1937 CHARLES BARTLETT HARLESS Charles Bartlett HARLESS, farmer who lived two miles east and three south of Elk City, died Tuesday afternoon about 4:30 at a local hospital from wounds received shortly before noon Monday. Harless was shot in the abdomen while he and Bill LEWIS were in a fight. Circumstances leading up to the fight were not learned, but Police Chief Orlin JONES and J. P. ELLIOTT, who were called to the scene, said that they were told HARLESS had gone to the LEWIS farm and an argument started. HARLESS told ELLIOTT, while being brought to the hospital in an ambulance, "The boy shot me." LEWIS was taken to the Washita County jail at Cordell where he was being held pending filing of charges. Mr. HARLESS had been a resident of Oklahoma since 1901. He was born March 14, 1881, in Travis County, Texas. He was married in 1904 to Laura BURLESON in Edwards County, Texas. Survivors are his widow, one brother, Brown HARLESS, Elk City; and two sisters, Mrs. Ellen MAXEY, Shawnee, and Mrs. Ida KENNEDY, Lugert. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Killough-Hullum chapel with John H. BANISTER, minister of the Church of Christ, officiating.
