S. E. HART Sarah Elizabeth Bates was born in Illinois, June 20, 1852, and died in Elk City, Saturday, January 12, aged 71 years, 6 months and 23 days. She was married to John Hart when nearly twenty years of age, and eight children were born to this union. Two died in infancy, the surviving children being Louis Hart, of Carter, J. C. Hart, of Elk City, Mrs. Ava Snowden, Rankin, Mrs. Lee Evans, Canadian, Texas, Chas. H. Hart, Oldem, Texas, and Mrs. Hettie Fowler, Cheyenne. She was a sister of F. M. and B. F. Bates of this city. She moved here from Hood County, Texas, in 1897, and had gone through the hardships of the frontier days. She joined the M. E. Church South in early life and ever lived a consistent christian life. Funeral services were held at the Church of God on Sunday afternoon, where a large crowd gathered to pay the last respects to their friend and neighbor. A number of relatives were in attendance. The services were conducted by Rev. W. M. Cochran of Clinton. He spoke of the beauty of a christian's life, death, burial, resurrection, bringing in words of comfort to those who were left because they would know where to find her because of her beautiful Christian life. He exhorted the unsaved to be ready when their summons came. The choir sang some beautiful songs.
