Jonas Hedlund Passed Away With Family at His Bedside, Burial in California. All Elk City was saddened Friday when the announcement came that Jonas Hedlund had passed away at Pasadena, California, where he went with his family several months ago for the benefit of his health. His condition has been serious for some time, and his sons and their families hastened to his bedside, at the first knowledge of his illness. More than thirty telegrams and as many floral offerings were sent by Elk City friends and these were a great comfort during the trying hours. Everything that medical skill could do availed not and he passed peacefully away, entering into his last rest surrounded by those whom he loved. The family all being away it is impossible to get the data for an obituary this week. All that is known is that interment was made Forest Lawn Mausoleum. (1 Apr 1926, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Jonas Hedlund died in the Pasadena Hospital, Thursday, March 25th, after an illness of about three weeks. His entire family, children and grandchildren, were with him during his last days and this helped him in his suffering and comforting to the sorrowing wife. The funeral arrangements were beautifully and sympathetically carried out by a Pasadena undertaker and Mr. Hedlund look very natural lying on a soft couch casket. The services were held in "The Little Church of the Flowers," at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, which was a veritable bower of flowers with those from Elk City friends and those growing there. The service was conducted by Rev. H. C. Culbertson of Los Angeles, who made a beautiful and comforting talk. Rev. Culbertson is a friend of the family, having been president of the College of Emporia, at Emporia, Kansas, during the time Walter and his sisters attended school there. The little chapel was filled with friends mostly old Kansas friends of the family now living in California. Interment was made in the magnificent Forest Lawn Mausoleum, a marble palace of enduring beauty, whose surroundings are beautiful beyond description. In the letter Mr. Hedlund states that he does not know just when he will return to Elk City, but possibly not for a week or more as it is the desire of himself and family to spend just as much time as possible with his mother. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
