(14 Aug 1907, Wednesday, Elk City Record, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Charles H. Hemphill died at Sayre, August 9. He had been a great sufferer for years and was at Sayre for treatment at the time of his death. The I.O.O.F. Lodge at this place brought the body here Saturday and was buried in the city cemetery Sunday afternoon. Mr. Hemphill came to this country in the spring of 1898, filed on and settled on a claim three miles southwest of Elk City, before there was any town here. He made his home on it until the time of his death. He lived an honorable life before his neighbors and was respected by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed here for miles around. (15 Aug 1907, Sayre Standard, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Died from Congestion. Charley Hemphill, who lived near Elk City, died in Sayre Saturday from congestion, and the body was taken home for burial the same day. Hemphill had been suffering from a cancer, and was in a weak condition. He had come to Sayre for treatment, and Saturday morning it is reported that he took a cold bath, and soon after ate two dishes of ice cream, and either the cold bath or the ice cream, or both, caused congestion from which he died. He was about 40 years old, and had a family. (29 Aug 1907, Thursday, Elk City Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): MEMORIAL. We the members of the Prairie View Union, No. 180 of the F.E. and C.U. of Roger Mills Co. extend our sympathies to the wife, children and friends of our late departed and beloved brother C. H. Hemphill and promise to watch over and care for those whom he left behind, should they ever need our assistance. Mr. Hemphill was 42 years of age and had lived 3 miles S.W. of Elk for 8 years. He died of Brights disease. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
