M. Bates, near Rhoads Post office, on February 4th, 1905, aged eighty-seven years. When a child he moved with his parents to New York, where later he was married, but his wife died in 1863. Ten children were born of this union, Mrs. Bates being the youngest child, and but a few months old at the death of her mother. The children grew to manhood and to womanhood, and all were married, but since three sons have passed away, namely; Ed, William and David. Father Holben moved from New York to Illinois in 1866, afterwards to Nebraska, and four years ago came to Roger Mills county with his daughter, Mrs. Bates, with whom he has lived for six years. About fifty years ago he united with the Presbyterian church and he has ever lived a beautiful christian life. He has been ready so long to go, saying he had no fears but he was always patient, never complaining though sometimes he wondered why he was left when younger ones were taken. While quite feeble his sight and hearing became impaired, yet his mind was always bright and he was ever busy. With his knife he whittled many beautiful keepsakes out of wood, gyp, etc. At the first County Fair, held at Berlin over a year ago several pieces of his work were shown which were admired by everyone and especially more so as they learned of his age. He had not an enemy and was of a pleasant and kind disposition and has left a memory that will be always cherished by his loved ones. The remains of the deceased were interred in the cemetery on Mr. Manlove's place, on Sunday afternoon, February 5th, and despite the very cold weather a number of friends attended the last sad rites. Rev. M. E. Diehl had charge of the services and spoke comforting words. The relatives have the sympathy of all but their loss is his eternal gain. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
