J. Horstman (common to us all as "Daddy"). This jolly good character will now be missed by many, who have for the past few years been used to passing the time of day and receiving his jolly response. He knew everybody and everybody knew and liked him. For the past few years he had done a nice business on the streets of Elk City with his (.....missing words) and peanut wagon. (..... to his residence in Elk City, he farmed a few miles east of town. Mr. Horstman was born at Bath, Ill., June 10, 1855. After his marriage he moved to Iowa, later to Arkansas and twenty years ago he moved to Elk City when tents were the predominant houses of the early settlers. He leaves a loving wife, Amanda, and two sons, Charles D., of Elk City and Clarence, who lives in Seattle, Wash., and a great host of friends to mourn his death. Although the weather was very stormy Monday afternoon, many attended the services conducted by Rev. J. F. Hefley at the First M. E. Church. A great many cars accompanied the remains to Fairlawn cemetery where a short service was held in the rain. "Daddy's" death was certainly untimely. His health had been good lately, and his friends remark how hale and hearty he was only last Saturday evening. For some time past he had been complaining of his heart troubling him, and other than early in the mornings he felt fine, when he would complain of pains below his heart. Last Sunday morning about five o'clock, he feebly called on his wife for aid. Physicians were called, but it was too late, and he peacably (sic) passed on to our heavenly father and a better world, ere the sun shone on us. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
