C. Hughes, died Monday night between the hours of nine and ten at the residence of her son, E. R. Hughes, on West Broadway. Mrs. Hughes was born in Ross county, Ohio, May 27, 1847, and died September 17, 1906, being 59 years, 3 months and 17 days old at the time of her demise. She was married to P. C. Hughes at Sedalia, Mo. To this union five children were born, four sons and a daughter, four of whom survive her. Her death was sudden and unexpected and was regretted by every one as she was loved by all who knew her intimately and was liked by all of the patrons of the post office, who will sadly miss her smiling face at the window. It is hard to have to chronicle the death of a mother, for as one of our great authors said: "God could not be everywhere so He created a mother." Everyone sympathizes with the bereaved family, for it is hard to part with a loving wife and mother, but she has only gone on before to help God prepare a home for her loved ones in a brighter and better world than this. The funeral was preached today at 2 p.m., at the Presbyterian by Rev. D. J. M. Wood. She was intered (sic) immediately following the services. (26 Sep 1906, Wednesday, Elk City Record, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Josephine Middleton Hughes (Written for the Record.) E. church when but a school girl and has been a member ever since, belonging to the Elk City congregation at the time of her death which occured (sic) September 17, 1906 at 10 p.m. She was the mother of five children, four boys and a daughter. One son died in infancy leaving three boys and one daughter to survive her. The family moved to Kingfisher, Okla., from Kansas, where they lived eighteen months and where the sister was actively engaged in the work of the church. They then moved to the vicinity of Elk City where they have resided for the last six years. Sister Hughes is well known in Elk City society where she has left a host of friends. Her illness was of short duration during which she endured her sufferings with a Christian spirit expressing herself that death was but a dream; a blessed sleep.
