(26 Jun 1924, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): P. C. HUGHES DEAD. P. C. Hughes, the first postmaster of Elk City, died at the home of his daughter at Alva, Okla., on Sunday night. The body was brought to Elk City yesterday for burial, his son Roy Hughes coming in on the morning train from Washington, D. C., where he had been on business for the Corporation Commission, also his son Cotton Hughes from Hammon was here. Some of the old timers met the train and acted as pall bearers. Mr. Hughes was 82 years of age. (3 Jul 1924, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Perry C. Hughes was the son of John and Jane Reynolds Hughes, who married in Zanesville, O., 1826, and moved to Adams county Illinois in 1836. John Hughes was born near Wheeling, West Virginia in February 1804, and died in Adams County Illinois December 7, 1857. Perry C. Hughes was born June 15th, 1842, volunteering for enlistment in the 10th Regiment, Company E, Illinois Infantry, April 18th, 1861, under President Lincoln's first call; he was honorably discharged August 29th, 1861, but re-enlisted in Company H, 45th Iowa Infantry Volunteers. After retiring from the army he was admitted to the bar at Ottumwa, Iowa, in December 1865 and opened a law office in Sedalia, Missouri in May 1866. In the fall of 1869 he moved to Eureka, Kansas, and in April 1876 he located at Larned, Kansas. In September 1891 he moved his family to Kingfisher, Oklahoma and at the opening of the Cherokee Strip on September 16th, 1893, he made the run and located at Enid, Oklahoma. In 1900 he moved to Roger Mills County and on May 27th, 1901, was appointed Post Master at Elk City which position he held until his resignation July 1st, 1908. On February 21st, 1867 Perry C. Hughes married C. Josephine Middleton, the daughter of the true patriot and soldier Robert D. Middleton. To this union were born five children, one son dying in infancy at Larned, Kansas. Mrs. Hughes died September 17th, 1906 at Elk City, Oklahoma. Mr. Hughes was a member of the Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, and also the G.A.R.; he died at Alva, Oklahoma, at one a.m. Monday June 23rd, 1924 and was interred at Elk City beside his beloved wife on June 26th, 1924. The following children survive him: Otis A. Hughes, Hammon, Oklahoma; Wirt M. Hughes, St. Paul, Minnesota; Mrs. Myrtle Lord, Alva, Oklahoma; and Edwin R. Hughes, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Funeral services for Mr. Hughes were held at the First M. E. Church on last Thursday morning, where a number of friends attended. The pall bearers were W. H. Winn, J. H. Story, Ward Ulmer, G. H.
