T. H. JARVIS Emma Barthlow Jarvis, wife of T. H. Jarvis, was born in Knox county, Ohio, October 29th, 1851, and died in Elk City, Thursday night, August 30th, 1917, leaving to mourn her loss, her husband, a daughter, Mrs. C. B. Macklin of Wichita Falls, Texas, two sisters, one brother and a large circle of friends. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal Church, Saturday morning, September 1st, Rev. Houck officiating. Mesdames J. G. Scott, Chas. Harris, Florence Brown, and May Royse, sweetly sang several selections. The pall bearers were members of the M.E. Aid Society, being Mesdames C. R. Shirley, I. C. Burnham, May Royse, J. G. Scott, Amos Williams and Alice Blackburn. Mrs. Jarvis was one of the early settlers of Elk City, and was well known and greatly beloved. She was a prominent worker in the Methodist Episcopal church, and from its organization here, was an officer in the Aid Society until she moved from our city a few years ago. She was also a prominent member of the W.C.T.U., when it had an organization here, filling county offices in that time. She was brave and true, silent in her demeanor, yet powerful in christian character, calm in her public expressions, yet devine in loyalty and trust. Many feel the impulse of her life and long to live as faithful and true. She had been ill for several years and talked of death as if going on a journey. She loved her family and would have been glad to stay for their sakes, but when she suffered so intensely she wondered why she could not go. Once a few weeks ago, it seemed she was gone, but after being restored to consciousness she asked why they did not let her go, for she said she was "just over on the other side and it was so beautiful there." Her sincere talks to her family, telling them of her wishes for their souls welfare and how they must not grieve touched everyone. How she loved her two little grandchildren. They were her joy and gave her much pleasure. She was so devoted to her family. Her only child, Mrs. Marguerite Macklin, was given every thought and care and devotion between them was sublime. Mrs. Jarvis was converted in early life and was a devout and earnest Christian. She was formerly a school teacher and taught in one school in Illinois for thirteen consective terms. It was always a pleasure to talk with her, for her mind was so active and she was so broad, with a fund of information on almost every subject. Her sweet patient trusting life will ever be a benediction to those who have known her. Interment was made in the beautiful Fairlawn cemetery, Chandler & Robinson being in charge. The sympathy of all is extended to the bereaved ones. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
