Died Saturday June 6th, 1926. Age 51 years and seven days. Funeral services were conducted by Father Geeraert at the Catholic church Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock. Interment was made in the Catholic Cemetery. It was with the deepest heartfelt sorrow we learned of the sudden death of Mrs. Mary Jenkins, one of the first residents of this town. After a short illness of the flu she passed away, Saturday, June 5th (sic), at the Tisdal Hospital, where she had been taken in order to receive the electrical treatments which seemed necessary to combat the affects of the disease. Mrs. Jenkins came to this part of the country in the early day, with her parents, who owned and conducted one of the first hotels in Western Oklahoma. It was known as the Nugent house and stood at the corner of 3rd and Jefferson until a year or so ago. She proved up a farm near here and also taught school, having gone through many experiences and shouldering many responsibilities even as a young girl. Her friends are numbered by her acquaintances - to know her was to love her. She was always ready to aid any one in any way she could and was always cheerful and optimistic, no matter how dark the clouds of life. She cared for her aged parents until their death. Having been left a widow in her early married life, she raised and educated two wonderful daughters who are certainly a credit to her and to the town they know as home. Helen, the older graduated from St. Mary's Institute a couple of years ago and is now employed at the Farmers National Bank. Jessie graduated last term and is now in training at St. Anthony's Hospital at Okla. City. Mrs. Jenkins was a staunch Catholic and her funeral was held from St. Joseph's Church and interment at Calvary Cemetery by the side of her parents. She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors. Many beautiful floral pieces were mute evidence of the high esteem in which she was held. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
