(26 Feb 1903, Elk City Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): We are pleased to receive and publish a sketch of the history of our late City Judge who died the 9th of February at his home in Elk City. Many knew him since he came among us and all loved him for his many virtues. His decisions while on the bench were always rendered according to the law and evidence independent of the desires of friend or foe. Justice to all mankind was his aim. He was a great student of the brotherhood of man. We mourn his loss. Rest to his clay. May his spirit hover o'er the rugged path of us that's left and guide our footsteps to a peaceful end. The following obituary is taken from the Bethany (Mo.) Democrat: "OBITUARY" "David T. Johnson was born in Rappahannock county, Va., May 9, 1845, and departed this life at Elk City, Okla., February 9, 1903. Mr. Johnson came to this section of the country in 1850. He married Miss Arcena Allen in 1869. Five children have been born of this union; Mrs. J. F. Kline, of this city, and Harfield, being the only ones living. The deceased had been in failing health for some years and the last year or two has been staying in Oklahoma as that climate agreed with him better than this. He was a kind and loving husband, father and friend. He united with the Church of Christ several years ago and at time has been quite active. Funeral service were held from the Christian church, Thursday, Feb. 12, 1903, conducted by Elder J. H. Stark in the presence of a large concourse of friends and relatives and then the interment took place at Miriam cemetery under the auspices of the W.O.W., of which organization the deceased was a member." --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
