Holt Kelly of north of Elk City, died at the Elk City Hospital, Monday night, April 13, from an operation performed Sunday night. Obituary will follow. (24 Apr 1925, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): JOSEPH HOLT KELLY Funeral services for Holt Kelly whose death we announced in Tuesday's issue, was held at the Baptist Church, on Tuesday, at 3:30 p.m. The spacious church was filled to overflowing with friends and neighbors to show their sympathy. The ladies of the Baptist Church had decorated with beautiful plants and flowers. Many lovely floral offerings covered the casket and were placed around upon the platform. Two lovely bouquets were from the school at Bella Vista where Holt attended. The school was dismissed and the scholars attended the funeral in a body in care of the teachers Lloyd Lee and Miss Phillips. The choir sang several songs and a special duett was sung by S. L. Brown (the singer at the revival - and Mrs. Ansley, the choir joining in chorus. Rev. Moore led in prayer and Rev. L. D. Mitchell spoke comforting words to the bereaved ones, and told of the conversion of Holt at a meeting held by his uncle John Kelly at Bella Vista; last fall. Holt joined the M. E. Church South where his parents belonged, but because of his conversion under his uncle who is a Baptist minister and so many of the relatives belonging to the church, it was thought appropriate to have services in the Baptist Church. Six school mates from Bella Vista acted as pall bearers. Holt Kelly, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. M. Kelly, was born in West Virginia, November 7, 1908 and died in Elk City, April 13th, 1925, aged 16 years, 5 months and 6 days. When he was a small child his parents moved to Oklahoma and he grew up in the Bella Vista neighborhood. He was the only son, two baby brothers having preceded him in death. His parents had great hopes for his future and they with the two sisters are heart broken over his death. He was a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kelly, living southwest of Elk City and had many other relatives, a large number attending the funeral services. Holt was sick with the flu and took a relapse and the infection from the flu was the cause of his death. The interment was in Fairlawn cemetery in charge of Grubitz & Son. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
