MARY KELLY Mrs. Mary N. Kelly, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. M. Steele, of Berlin, Okla., was born April 24th, 1892, in Weiner, Ark., and died at Berlin, September 27. She was a nurse by profession doing all she could to relieve suffering humanity, and had just returned a short time before her death from caring for a neighbor who had undergone operation. Her death was caused from a severe attack of asthma accompanied by heart trouble. She was converted in September, 1923, in a Methodist meeting held at Berlin and joined that church. Since that time she had been a devoted christian. In her search for souls she organized a class of boys and girls in a Sunday School class, and the Community prayer meeting selected her as their president to which she was a devoted and untiring worker until God called her home. Just before taking the attack that caused her death, she was studying up unto the wee small hours of the night preparing her Bible lessons for the coming week. A short funeral service was held at the home of her parents where one from her little Sunday School class sang a song and words of sympathy were expressed by Rev. Lackey, her pastor. The body, followed by a large concourse of friends including her little Sunday School class, was brought to Elk City where services were held in the M. E. Church South. Nurses, with whom she had been associated were in the choir. Dr. J. A. Jester read the scripture lesson, and Rev. Lackey paid tribute to the deceased speaking many comforting words, using as his text, "Let not your heart be troubled." Her last testimony in the community prayer meeting had been "I want to live so that everyone will know that I am leading a christian life." This was conceded by the people of that community, who will ever remember her as one always ready after her conversion to do what she could for God's cause, and was a most faithful church member. As the choir sang "Rock of Ages" her favorite song, the friends passed by the bier to take the last look of the friend they loved and respected. The floral offerings were abundant and beautiful while the ladies of the church had decorated the altar with many cut flowers. After the funeral service she was laid to rest in Fairlawn Cemetery in the presence of a host of sorrowing relatives and friends. Among those who mourn the loss is a little daughter, her parents, a brother, Rev. Thos. Steele, of Clayton, New Mexico, four sisters, Catherine, Magdaline and Elizabeth Steele, of Berlin, Okla., and Mrs. Camilla Bader of Boise City, Okla. The News Democrat join with the many friends in extending deepest sympathy to the bereaved ones. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
