(11 Jun 1914, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): On Tuesday, May 26th 1914, Sister Cornelia F. Kent, wife of Geo. W. Kent passed from her earthly dwelling to that realm of which during her life time she had so often sung. Sister Kent whose maiden was Avery, was born in Green county, Alabama, January 13, 1845. She was married to Geo. W. Kent, Feb. 15th 1865, and to this union thirteen children were born, one of which died in infancy, the others together with their father survive her. The deceased was a pronounced christian from girlhood. Of her, we can truthfully say, that the process of years had so mellowed her heart and life that all who knew her, join in saying that she was one of the most lovable christian characters. In memory her of pure life and labor of love, she is given a place in hearts of her many christian friends scarcely second to that of those good women whom Paul mentions in his letters on account of their abundant labors. Our beloved sister was ever true to her husband, devoted to her children, and loyal to her God. Since God has taken her from the queenly throne of home may her children, yea her children's children enshrine the memory of her good life in their heart and so walk upon earth that they may meet her in that deathless and sorrowless land. The last five verses in the book of Proverbs is to our mind, the best description of such a Godly woman. Such lives do not, like the waves that lash the shores, become a spectacle to the world, but like the full and restless current, bear upon their bosom, full many a bark that were it not for their restraining influence would be dashed in pieces upon life's ragged coast. Let those who may chance to read these lines, with uncovered heads raise their voices with ours in a tribute of praise to unselfish christian motherhood. By request of sister Kent the writer stood beside her lifeless body to console the bereaved, warn the careless and fan the flame of hope in the hearts of all. The remains were laid to rest in the Elk City Cemetery. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
