(18 Aug 1927, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): George C. King, Master Farmer, prominent and loved citizen, Sunday School teacher and church worker, died at his home two miles south and five miles west of Elk City Tuesday evening at 7:20 o'clock, and a long and useful life was ended. His passing was sudden and painless, the dread disease, paralysis, creeping over him, eventually reaching the heart despite all that could be done to prolong his life. Mr. King and his family came to what was at that time Roger Mills county in 1903. For the first year they made their home on the homestead of his brother, Rube King, at the end of which time he purchased a relinquishment to the place which has been the family home ever since. Mr. King was born March 15, 1868, at Sturgeon, Missouri. He was left an orphan at the age of five years and began shifting for himself at an early age. It is no doubt due to this fact that he possessed the traits of character which made him a man among men. An incident told by his wife shows the depth of feeling which he possessed. When they were married and started the new home, among their possessions was a number of hens. As nightfall approached Mrs. King found him sitting outside the house with tears in his eyes. When asked what the trouble was he pointed to the hens looking about for a place to spend the night, and said he knew just how they felt for he had been in their place so many times - that in all his whole life this was the first home he had ever known. Mr. and Mrs. King were the parents of five children, one girl and four boys, Mrs. Roy Walters of this city; Everyly, aged 21; Edgar, aged 18, and Wesley, aged 15, all of whom are at home. Their eldest son, Lester, died at Stillwater about a year ago. Mr. King is also survived by three brothers, Rube King of Elk City, and P. T. and Will King, living in Missouri. Mr. King had not been in particularly poor health. Sunday morning he and the family attended church and Sunday School at the Broadway Methodist Church. As this was the sixth wedding anniversary of the daughter, Mrs. Roy Walters and husband, they held a celebration at the Walters home in this city. The funeral will be held from the Broadway Methodist church in this city, Thursday, August 18, at 4 o'clock conducted by the pastor, Rev. Ernest C. Webb, after which interment will be made in Fairlawn cemetery with Gentry-Killough in charge of arrangements. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
