(12 Feb 1920, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Obituary - Knowles. Mary E. Brunson was born at Ruskylvania, Ohio, June 26th, 1852 and died at Valley Falls, Kansas, January 22, 1920, her age being 67 years, 6 months and 26 days. On November 18, 1896 (sic), she was united in marriage with R. B. Knowles at the place of her birth, where she continued to live for sixteen years after her marriage. She has four sons: Frank S. Knowles of Valley Falls; Jesse B. Knowles of Lima, Ohio; Charles A. Knowles and Clyde Knowles of Valley Falls and all born at Rushylvania, Ohio. In the spring of 1885 the family moved to Muscotah, Kansas, and in the fall of the same year came to the farm north of Valley Falls, now occupied by Charles A. Knowles. On this farm three years later her husband died. In January of 1902 she moved to town and lived here until her death. From girlhood she has been an active and devout member of the Methodist church and during her long membership in the Valley Falls church, endeared herself greatly by quiet faithfulness to all its services. In the spring of 1919 she suffered a stroke of partial paralysis, but recovered partially. The second stroke proved fatal after a very few minutes. Besides the four sons and their families, the deceased is survived by a sister, Mrs. Jane Plummer of Lima, Ohio, and a brother, J. H. Brunson of Elk City, Oklahoma. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. C. E. Holcombe. Interment was in Rose Hill cemetery, the four sons with the brother of the deceased and a grandson, Ralph Knowles, acting as pall bearers. The exceptionally large attendance bore testimony to the high place Mrs. Knowles held in the esteem of her neighbors. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
