M. H. Koontz was born in Virginia in 1843. He enlisted in the Confederate Army, serving the South as his convictions prompted him, later he became dissatisfied and joined the Union Army and served until the close of the war and was granted an honorable discharge. His death occurred on Monday March 25, at 3 o'clock p.m., after a lingering illness of several weeks duration. He is survived by his wife and six children, three children preceeded him to the grave. His children were all with him when the end came. He was elected two years ago on the council and was appointed sanitary police which positions he held until his death. Out of respect for the deceased Mayor Hixon asked that all business houses be closed during the funeral hour which met with a hearty response. Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ conducted by Eld. D. Bills. The Mayor, Hixon, Fire chief, Hughes and four councilmen acted as pall bearers. Burial at the city cemetery. Mr. Koontz was one of our most highly respected citizens, of a quiet unassuming nature and had a host of friends who join us in sympathy with the bereaved family. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
