J. LAWSON Andrew Jackson Lawson was born in East Tennessee, March 27th, 1840, died in Oklahoma City, Okla., September 27th, 1919, aged 79 years and 6 months. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in this city last Sunday afternoon, September 28th, Rev. Bowles officiating. A large crowd of friends were present to pay their last tribute to our noble christian friend. The Masons conducted their beautiful services at Fairlawn cemetery, Grubitz & Son had charge of interment. Mr. Lawson was one of the charter members of the Masonic Lodge in Elk City, also in the organization of the Baptist church. He was a soldier during the Civil War, being in the 5th Tennessee, Co. C. He came to Oklahoma at the opening of old Oklahoma and filed on a claim near Oklahoma City, which place he owned until his death. He was one of our pioneers who was true to the highest ideals of life, a true friend, one whom could always be depended upon, ever ready to help the needy and humanity. He was converted when sixteen years of age. He was under great conviction and when out in the field plowing he gave up and knelt down by his plow and asked God to have mercy upon him. The first thing he knew he was running around clapping his hands and shouting. His religious experience ever stayed with him and he heeded the scriptural injunction, "Be thou faithful unto death." Faithfulness characterized his life, honesty and integrity of character were elements prominent in his life. He was a home loving man, devoted to wife and children. He leaves an aged wife and four daughters, Mrs. Anna Hemphill, Oklahoma City; Mrs. O. E. Huffman, Elk City; Mrs. Ola Cox, Yukon, Okla.; and Mrs. Belle Smith, Wichita Falls, Texas. The bereaved family have the deepest sympathy of friends in their great sorrow in which the News-Democrat family wish to join.
